Snapseed Next Update New Features: What Android Users Get Now
Google has shipped two Snapseed updates for Android this month, and the Snapseed next update new features are already rolling out no waiting required. Version 4.1 adds support for RAW files from major camera manufacturers alongside in-tool undo and redo. A follow-up release, version 4.1.1.x, brings geotagging, original-image preservation, and custom save folders to Snapseed Camera. iOS users are confirmed to be getting these changes eventually, but no date has been set, per Android Authority.
The timing matters. Snapseed 4.0 launched in May with a rebuilt interface, a built-in camera with real-time film emulation, non-destructive editing, masking and layers, batch editing, a histogram, and more than 30 tools all free, with no subscriptions, ads, or watermarks, according to 9to5Google. July's additions address areas that early coverage flagged as gaps: RAW file compatibility at the import stage, editing fluency inside individual tools, and capture-side workflow controls.
Snapseed 4.1: expanded RAW format support
The headline change in version 4.1 is native support for RAW files across seven formats: DNG, ARW (Sony), RAF (Fujifilm), NEF (Nikon), CR3 (Canon), ORF (Olympus), and PEF (Pentax). The Snapseed team described the list as covering the "vast majority of RAW formats and cameras," per the team's own Reddit post as cited by Digital Trends.
That's a meaningful addition for photographers who move RAW files from a dedicated camera to their Android phone. The app previously couldn't handle these formats without conversion, as Digital Trends reported. Now a Sony mirrorless shooter with ARW files, or a Fujifilm user with RAF files, can bring those images directly into Snapseed.
Google says the expanded support involved "improving image processing" and "ironing out corner cases," per 9to5Google. That language points to backend work rather than a simple format toggle. The team also acknowledged that a few formats "aren't quite there yet" and warned that RAW processing bugs may surface asking users to report anything they find, according to Digital Trends.
The rollout is gradual on Android to help catch major issues before the update reaches everyone. iOS support is confirmed as forthcoming, but the team hasn't committed to a date, per Android Authority.
In-tool undo and redo
Version 4.1 also removes a long-standing friction point in the editing workflow. Previously, reversing a change inside an individual tool Curves, Selective, or any other required exiting back to the main editor screen first. The update adds undo and redo controls that work while staying inside the tool, according to Digital Trends.
Google's own language is worth noting here: "most actions can now be undone or redone while editing within your favorite tools," per 9to5Google. The qualifier "most" implies some edge cases may not be covered, so this is an improvement to the existing behavior rather than a complete overhaul of the app's edit history system. Android Authority described the change as one that could make editing faster than before.
The change is also a practical complement to expanded RAW support. Complex files from dedicated cameras typically require more adjustment passes, which makes in-context undo more useful than it would be during a casual edit of a phone snapshot.
Snapseed Camera geotags and save original image features
Version 4.1.1.x focuses on the camera module and adds three distinct controls for capturing, saving, and organizing images.
The first is "Capture original for re-editing," enabled by default. When shooting with a Film Style or Look applied, Snapseed Camera now saves a clean base image alongside the stylized version, per 9to5Google. That matters for photographers who shoot with high-contrast film emulations baked in at capture the neutral original stays available for future editing instead of being discarded at the moment of shooting.
The second addition is a "Location Metadata" toggle in Camera Settings, which embeds GPS coordinates in photos at capture, according to 9to5Google. Unlike the original-saving option, geotagging is off by default. Enabling it requires a deliberate opt-in and an explicit location permission grant. That's a sensible default: location data embedded in image files travels with those files wherever they're shared, so the burden of enabling it sits with the user rather than the other way around.
Third, users can now direct Snapseed Camera to save images to a custom folder. New folders can be created directly through the system file picker, per 9to5Google. It's a straightforward organizational addition that was absent from the camera module before this release.
What the July updates fill in and what's still missing

July's updates address the gaps that early coverage of 4.0 had noted: RAW file compatibility, in-tool editing fluency, and capture-side workflow controls.
The resulting app, at least on Android, now covers a broader stretch of the mobile photography process in a single free tool: shoot with manual controls and film emulations, preserve originals for later re-editing, import RAW files from most major camera brands, edit them with undo available inside each tool. Android Police noted that Snapseed's approach stays conspicuously manual at a moment when most photo apps are competing on AI automation no one-tap generative edits, no subscription, no watermarks.
The development pace is also worth noting as context. Google surprised observers with a significant Snapseed release in June 2025 after a long dormant period, then shipped the major 4.0 redesign in May, per 9to5Google. Two substantive follow-up updates within a single month is consistent with a faster cadence than Snapseed showed during those quieter years.
Gaps remain. The Snapseed Camera still lacks composition aids no grid, no level indicator, as Android Police observed. RAW rendering for less common formats and edge-case files is a work in progress by Google's own admission. And iOS users are still waiting on parity for all of these features, with no scheduled date. The direction is clear; the timeline is not.
