Pixel Recorder New Icon Update: What Changed and Didn't
Google is rolling out a redesigned icon for Pixel Recorder, the first change to the app's icon in the seven years since it launched on the Pixel 4 in 2019, according to 9to5Google. The change follows an update to the Journal app last week and fits a pattern Google has been applying across several first-party Pixel apps, 9to5Google reported yesterday. It's a small, visible change, arriving alongside a couple of interface tweaks that are easy to miss if you're not looking for them.

The new mark drops the red background entirely, replacing it with a simplified red waveform on white that's noticeably less detailed than the version it replaces, 9to5Google reported. Earlier coverage of the broader icon refresh described the approach as similar to what Google did with Weather: stripping away the colored background in favor of a more stylized foreground symbol, according to a 9to5Google report from six days ago.
Recorder keeps its red accent rather than shifting to the blue tone used by several other refreshed icons. That earlier report specifically flagged Recorder, Calculator, and Weather for not going all blue, calling it "a nice bit of differentiation" among the redesigned set, per 9to5Google.
The effect reads like modernization without losing recognition: Recorder still looks like Recorder, just simplified down to fewer visual details.
What the Pixel Recorder new icon update changes
The release is primarily cosmetic, according to 9to5Google, which notes no major functional or visual updates accompany the new icon.
The one exception is the three-dot overflow menu on individual recordings, which has been reordered so "Edit title" gets more prominence while "Delete" is no longer the first action listed, 9to5Google reported.
The new look also appears in Recorder's Quick Settings tile and media-player artwork, per 9to5Google.
Availability is limited for now. Version 4.2.20260709.960184543 is live on Google Play, but 9to5Google notes it's not yet widely available, and the reporting doesn't specify which Pixel generations are currently eligible.

Recorder joins a growing list of first-party Pixel apps getting new icons this month. Journal made the switch last week, Calculator, Camera, Clock, and Weather followed within days of each other, and My Pixel, Now Playing, and Screenshots already carried the newer style before any of this rolled out, according to 9to5Google.
These new Pixel app icons originated with the Pixel 11 series, and Google is now extending that look to the same apps on older phones through updates, 9to5Google reported. The reporting confirms updates for the apps named above, but it doesn't identify which apps are still waiting, which older devices qualify, or when the rollout might reach full coverage.
A redesign years in the making
The icon echoes a redesign already underway inside the app itself. Last year, Google rolled out a Material 3 Expressive overhaul that reworked much of Recorder's interface, starting with a thicker, simpler waveform in place of the original thin line, according to 9to5Google's coverage of that update. Playback controls were pared down to an oblong play button and a rectangular pause button, flanked by pills for skipping five seconds back or forward, sitting beneath a redesigned Material 3 slider.
The app bar shrank to just a recording's name, a star for favoriting, and a three-dot menu that absorbed nearly every other action, from deleting and sharing to searching a transcript, per 9to5Google. The homepage picked up a pill-shaped search field for recordings, along with adjusted fonts and colors throughout. During active recording, oversized pause and stop pills took over, with delete relocated to a trash icon in the corner.
That overflow menu is the same one getting tweaked this week. The 2026 update reorders two of the items it already held, moving "Edit title" ahead of "Delete," 9to5Google reported.
The 2025 coverage appeared alongside reports about the Pixel 10 series' new music-creation feature, per 9to5Google, which also reported the thicker waveform and wavy progress bars as part of the same round of changes.
Looking ahead for Pixel Recorder's redesigned icon
The unresolved question is availability. 9to5Google's reporting says the update isn't widespread yet, and it doesn't identify which Pixel models are currently eligible.
Recorder joins a rollout already underway across several Pixel apps. Google has not identified the next apps or provided a schedule for broader availability.
