Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 One UI 9 update: how to check
Samsung has started rolling out the stable, Android 17-based Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 One UI 9 update. GSMArena reported the two foldables in South Korea's release wave last week, and SamMobile reported today that the update has since reached Europe. Samsung hasn't published a release date for the U.S., UK, Canada, India, or other major markets in the reporting reviewed so far.
If you own either foldable, open Settings > Software update > Check for updates right now to see if it's your turn, per SamMobile.
What follows is what's actually confirmed, what's still murky, and which of Samsung's bigger One UI 9 features are reported for these two 2023 devices versus reserved for newer hardware.
How to check for the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 One UI 9 update
Checking is simple: open Settings, tap Software update, then Check for updates. If the stable build has reached your region and carrier, it will show up there directly, per SamMobile.
The reported European builds use these firmware numbers: F946BXXU7HZIJ for the Fold 5 and F731BXXU7HZIJ for the Flip 5. SamMobile notes that package size wasn't disclosed at the time of reporting, and other regions may ship under different firmware identifiers once their own rollouts begin.
Before installing any major OS update, make sure you're on stable Wi-Fi and have enough battery to get through the install without the phone dying mid-update. That's basic phone hygiene rather than anything Samsung has specifically called out for this release, so treat it as common sense, not an official warning.
If the update isn't showing up yet
Stable One UI 9 reached South Korea first, with the Fold 5 and Flip 5 included in that wave alongside the Galaxy S23 series, GSMArena reported last week. SamMobile's reporting today indicates the update reached Europe about a week after the South Korea release.
Samsung should release the update in additional countries in the next few days, according to SamMobile. That's SamMobile's own framing, not a date Samsung has published, so treat it as an expectation rather than a confirmed schedule.
The reporting cited here doesn't mention the U.S., UK, Canada, India, or other major markets. That's a gap in available coverage, not proof those regions are excluded or delayed. If your market isn't named yet, it simply hasn't shown up in reporting so far.
If nothing appears in Settings, a short checklist beats guessing:
- Check Settings > Software update > Check for updates manually rather than waiting on a push notification, per SamMobile.
- Confirm your device model and region before comparing firmware numbers; the F946BXXU7HZIJ and F731BXXU7HZIJ builds are tied to the reported European release specifically.
- Keep in mind the available reporting doesn't include a date for several major markets, including the U.S., UK, Canada, and India.
- Wait for the official in-app update rather than sideloading a firmware package from unofficial sources.
What's new, and what's reported for your foldable
Samsung's own Japan newsroom states plainly that AI and other feature availability differs by device model, so it's worth assuming nothing from the full One UI 9 feature list applies equally across every eligible phone, per Samsung Newsroom Japan from last week.
SamMobile's device-specific coverage reports several features arriving on the Fold 5 and Flip 5 in this release: My FanCam for automatic subject tracking in video, improved Now Nudge contextual suggestions, customizable Now Brief cards, and voice-directed Photo Assist editing. The update also brings improved Samsung DeX window management, upgrades to Samsung Notes, Interpreter, Document Scan, and Voice Recorder, a new Warranty and Care section, more Quick Panel customization, and what SamMobile describes generally as stronger security and privacy protections, according to SamMobile.
That last line is worth separating from two features Samsung has promoted heavily for One UI 9 overall: Security Brief and Privacy Alerts. Samsung's global newsroom describes Security Brief as adding malware, unknown-source app, and unnecessary-permission alerts to Now Brief, and Privacy Alerts as on-device AI that flags background permission access, per Samsung Newsroom Global from last month. That announcement covers the platform broadly and doesn't name the Fold 5 or Flip 5 specifically, and SamMobile's device-level report doesn't name either feature by its product name. The generic protections SamMobile describes may or may not be the same thing, so don't assume Security Brief and Privacy Alerts have landed on your foldable just because the update mentions stronger security.
Two other features are named only for newer hardware in the available reporting. Samsung's Japan newsroom ties Japanese-language Gemini task automation, which lets users complete app tasks like booking a ride through voice commands, to the Fold8, Flip8, Galaxy S26 series, and Tab S12; the Fold 5 and Flip 5 aren't mentioned at all. Samsung says Scam Detection will be available in Japan, Canada, and India, per Samsung Newsroom Global, but that announcement doesn't confirm the feature on these two foldables specifically or say whether other markets get it later.
Samsung describes One UI 9 as a platform-wide release, but a feature announced for the platform isn't automatically on your specific phone. After installing, scroll through Settings and the apps listed above to see what actually showed up rather than assuming you got the full press-release list.
Check Settings > Software update now if you own a Galaxy Z Fold 5 or Z Flip 5. If nothing shows up, that's not confirmation your region has been skipped; Samsung simply hasn't published a date for every market yet. Skip unofficial firmware downloads and wait for the in-app update instead. Once it installs, work through Settings and the apps covered above to confirm which One UI 9 features actually arrived, since several of Samsung's bigger claims still aren't verified for this hardware.
