Google Motion Assist Android: What It Does in Android 17

Google has begun rolling out Motion Assist, an Android 17 feature that displays motion-synced dots onscreen to help reduce or eliminate the nausea that comes from using a phone in a moving vehicle. In its own materials, Google calls it Motion Assist by Google. Availability is spotty even among Pixel phones running Android 17, according to reports published last week by Android Authority and MobileSyrup.

The feature draws on a phone's accelerometer and gyroscope to move small dots along the screen's edge in sync with the car's motion. They shift left when the vehicle turns right, right when it turns left, and slide forward under braking (MobileSyrup; Ars Technica).

Motion Assist arrives through Google Play Services rather than a conventional software update. The reports show phones running Android 17 may not receive it at the same time, which is why two otherwise-identical Pixels can behave differently right now (Ars Technica).

How Google Motion Assist works

Once active, Motion Assist rings the screen's perimeter with dots that move opposite the direction of a turn and shift position under acceleration or braking. The feature is intended to give the passenger's visual system cues that correspond to the vehicle's movement, according to its stated design (Android Authority; Android Police).

Android Police describes the underlying technique as one that has been proven to reduce, and in some cases eliminate, motion sickness triggered by reading a phone screen in a moving car. The cited reports don't link to a study or describe a testing methodology, so that description is best read as the feature's design goal rather than an independently confirmed result (Android Police).

Google isn't the first company to try this. Apple built a similar system, called Vehicle Motion Cues, into iPhones starting in 2024, and Android Police describes it as working in essentially the same way, which suggests the two companies converged on similar mechanics independently. The same concept has since appeared on some Oppo, Vivo, and OnePlus phones. Android Police described Motion Assist as Android's first native implementation of the feature (Android Police).

Google's version has a longer history than the current rollout suggests. Android Authority first spotted the feature, then known as Motion Cues, in December 2024, and Ars Technica notes Google tested it internally starting that year but never expanded it beyond that testing until now. That stretch of internal testing likely explains why the feature arrives with fewer rough edges than a typical first release (Android Authority; Ars Technica).

That early build leaned on Android's "display over other apps" permission, which meant the dots couldn't render over system elements such as the lock screen, status bar, notifications, Quick Settings, or the volume panel. The version now reaching phones uses updated OS-level APIs, and the newer implementation can appear over other apps and system UI alike (Android Authority).

How to check for Google Motion Assist on your phone

Finding the setting, assuming it has reached a given device, means navigating to Settings > Your profile > All services > Personal & device safety > Motion Assist. Ars Technica notes it's usually nested one level below the main settings menu, near the bottom of that section (Android Authority; Android Police; MobileSyrup; Ars Technica).

From there, a toggle lets the phone detect vehicle motion and switch Motion Assist on automatically, while a Quick Settings tile allows manual activation without digging through menus. When it's running, a notification confirms the feature is active and doubles as an off switch (Android Authority; Ars Technica).

Users can also adjust the dots' color, shape, size, and opacity. A randomization option varies those parameters on its own, without anyone setting them manually (Android Authority; Ars Technica).

There's no separate app to download and no discrete update that flips the switch. Google is distributing Motion Assist through Play Services in a staged rollout, and the reports indicate that installing Android 17 or an up-to-date Play Services build does not necessarily mean the setting is already available (Ars Technica).

Why the Android motion sickness feature rollout looks so uneven

The unevenness isn't theoretical. Android Police checked three phones, a Pixel 11, a Pixel 11 Pro, and a Pixel 11 Pro XL, last week and found Motion Assist absent on all three (Android Police).

MobileSyrup's reporting, published a day later, told a more scattered story. Members of Android Authority's Assemble Debug Telegram group reported seeing the feature on a Pixel 11 Pro XL, but MobileSyrup's own testing turned up nothing on a Pixel 11 Pro Fold or a Pixel 10 Pro XL, both running Android 17 (MobileSyrup).

Taken together, the two reports show real variation in access across similar hardware within a short window. Neither outlet identifies why.

The cited reports don't explain the pattern, and they don't establish whether the differences relate to device model, account, region, or simple rollout timing. Android Police notes there's "another option" for users without access yet but doesn't identify what that option involves in the cited report (Android Police). Android Authority offers similarly thin guidance: if the toggle isn't there yet, it may simply not have reached the device, with no further explanation given (Android Authority).

The scope of the rollout is narrow by design, at least for now. Ars Technica reports that Motion Assist has so far only appeared on Pixel devices running Android 17. MobileSyrup describes Pixel phones as getting the earliest phase of access, and Android Authority likewise frames the expansion as starting with Pixel hardware, though neither report says what comes next or when other Android phones might see it (Ars Technica; MobileSyrup; Android Authority).

For now, the cited reports don't provide an eligibility list or rollout timetable, and none describe a user-controlled way to enable the feature ahead of schedule.

Motion Assist is rolling out, and the mechanics behind it, sensor data driving screen-edge dots, are documented clearly enough across the coverage reviewed here. What isn't documented is Google's timetable or criteria for reaching more phones. Whether the company publishes eligibility details, extends Motion Assist beyond Pixel hardware, or releases data on how well the dots work in practice are the open questions as the rollout continues.
