Google's Gemini for Home rollout is easier to understand once you separate what is free from what requires a subscription. The basic Gemini for Home voice assistant costs nothing extra on compatible speakers and displays, while Google Home Premium adds more advanced conversation, automation, and camera features.
The split comes down to three levels: free, $10-a-month Standard, and $20-a-month Advanced. Standard adds Gemini Live, AI-assisted automation creation, and 30 days of event video history. Advanced adds longer video history and Google's most capable camera-AI tools, including Home Brief and natural-language video search.
Gemini for Home is also no longer limited to US early access. Google now lists availability across 20 countries, though support still varies by device, language, and region.

Google AI subscribers may already have paid access. Google AI Pro and Ultra memberships include Google Home Premium benefits, with AI Ultra including the Advanced plan.
What works for free
The free tier covers much of what people previously used Google Assistant for, but with Gemini's more conversational language processing. Users can control smart-home devices, play media, set alarms and timers, manage calendar events, create notes and lists, set reminders, and ask general questions.
Continued Conversation is also free. It briefly keeps an interaction open after Gemini responds, letting users follow up without repeating "Hey Google" every time.
Gemini can maintain context, handle exceptions, combine several actions in one request, and follow corrections without forcing users to start over.
Ask Home also has free functions. Google's Ask Home feature list includes quick search, simple device questions, and real-time controls without a Premium subscription.
One important catch: Google says households that upgrade compatible devices to Gemini for Home cannot switch those devices back to Google Assistant.
What $10 Standard adds
Google Home Premium Standard's biggest voice upgrade is Gemini Live, which supports longer, more natural conversations after users start a Live session.
Standard also includes Help me create, which turns a plain-language description into an automation users can review and edit before saving. Google notes that some devices and automation capabilities are not yet supported.
For households with compatible cameras and doorbells, Standard also includes 30 days of event-based video history.
What requires the $20 Advanced plan
Advanced is where Google's biggest camera upgrades appear.
It extends event video history to 60 days and offers up to 10 days of continuous 24/7 history on supported wired cameras and doorbells. It also unlocks Gemini-powered camera features, including detailed event descriptions and AI-enhanced notifications.
Camera-history search lets users find recorded footage with natural-language questions instead of manually scrubbing through clips, while Home Brief generates a daily summary of notable events.
These capabilities are described in Google's own product documentation rather than independent testing. Their reliability in poor lighting, ambiguous scenes, or security-sensitive situations may vary, so AI-generated descriptions and summaries should not be treated as infallible.
Which speakers support Gemini for Home?
New hardware is not required for many existing Google devices.
Google lists the full Gemini for Home voice assistant as compatible with the Nest Hub (1st and 2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Audio, Nest Mini (2nd gen), Google Home Mini (1st gen), and Google Home Speaker.
Older devices, including the original Google Home, Google Home Max, Nest Wifi points, and some third-party speakers, support most Gemini for Home features but not Gemini Live.
Google's 2026 Home Speaker was built around Gemini for Home, but buying it does not remove the subscription split. The basic assistant is included, while Gemini Live and advanced camera tools still require the appropriate Premium tier.
Google Home app gets faster and absorbs more Nest features
Google says the redesigned Home app loads more than 70% faster on some Android devices and crashes nearly 80% less often than it did several months before the redesign. Those are company-reported figures and have not been independently benchmarked.
Google also reports 30% faster camera live-view loading, 40% fewer playback failures, and more than six times the previous frame rate when scrolling through camera history.
The app now handles more legacy Nest functions as well, including Nest Protect alerts, Nest x Yale Lock passcode management, and support for Nest Thermostats released from 2015 onward. Google's latest Home update notes also document expanded Gemini access and additional automation capabilities.
The bottom line on free vs. Premium
Gemini for Home has expanded well beyond its original US rollout, but availability still depends on hardware, language, region, and subscription tier.
The pricing divide is straightforward: basic Gemini voice controls, Continued Conversation, and some Ask Home features are free; $10 Standard adds Gemini Live, automation creation, and longer camera history; and $20 Advanced unlocks Google's strongest camera-AI features.
For existing Nest and Google Home owners, the real question is not whether they need new hardware, but whether their current device supports the Gemini features they want — and whether those features are worth paying for.
