Google App Search Bar Redesign: What 17.32 Changes

Google App Search Bar Redesign: What 17.32 Changes

Google's search bar has a new look on Pixel phones, and it's a narrow one. 9to5Google reported earlier this year that Google rolled out a slightly taller pill-shaped search bar in the Pixel Launcher, along with larger Lens, voice search, and AI Mode icons, in Google app version 17.32 on the stable channel. The screenshots came from Android 16, so this Google Search bar new look is tied to the app itself, not a system update or an Android 17 requirement.

It's tempting to read this Google app search bar redesign as the opening move of something bigger. Google separately announced a far more ambitious "intelligent Search box" earlier this year, and the two are easy to conflate. Nothing in the available reporting confirms they're the same rollout, and a resized icon isn't proof of new AI capability.

The resize applies to both the Pixel Launcher's bottom bar and the Google app's homescreen Search widget, per 9to5Google. On its own, it doesn't confirm access to AI Mode, Search Live, or anything else Google detailed in its spring announcement.

The pill-shaped bar grew "a few pixels taller," and Google enlarged the Lens, voice search, and AI Mode icons beside it, making the row look more proportional, 9to5Google reported. The reporting describes a sizing and icon change only; it doesn't mention any new control, menu, or capability added to the bar itself.

The rightmost icon reflects AI Mode or whatever shortcut a user has already set there, 9to5Google noted. That shortcut itself isn't new. Google had already announced an AI Mode shortcut for the Google app's search bar last year, telling U.S. users they'd soon see it alongside a new AI Mode tab in Search, according to a Google blog post on AI Mode's design. What changed with version 17.32 is the icon's size, not its function.

The tweak rolled out through the Google app itself rather than through an Android system update, so two phones running the same OS version can look different depending on app version alone. To check whether you have it, open the Play Store listing for the Google app, or go to Settings, then Apps, then Google, and look at the version number. Version 17.32 is the version 9to5Google tied to the rollout, which makes it the reported threshold, not a guarantee that every account on that version shows the resized bar immediately.

What the Google app search bar redesign does not unlock

The taller bar is evidence of the reported visual update, but it doesn't establish access to the other features Google has announced around Search. Three separate things are worth checking, and clearing one doesn't clear the others.

App version. Confirm you're on 17.32 or later through the Play Store or app settings. This only tells you whether the resize should apply to your device.

AI Mode availability. Google said its new "intelligent Search box" started rolling out starting May 19, "in all countries and languages where AI Mode is available," according to Google's own announcement. Google's announcement does not list which countries or languages that includes, so whether AI Mode even shows up in your account is something to check directly in the app rather than infer from a resized icon.

Subscription tier. This is a separate eligibility factor for some of the announced features, not all of them. Google said in May that "information agents," which work in the background and deliver synthesized updates with the ability to take action, would reach AI Pro and Ultra subscribers over the summer, 9to5Google reported. Custom task "mini apps," built for ongoing projects like planning a wedding or managing a home move, were described as arriving in the coming months for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers specifically in the U.S., per the same report. Generative UI, by contrast, was slated to reach all users for free in that same window, 9to5Google said.

Summer has passed, and the supplied announcements don't provide a current October availability update, so that original timeline shouldn't be treated as confirmation that these features are live now. If you're an AI Pro or Ultra subscriber expecting information agents or mini apps, look for them in Search or AI Mode rather than assuming Google's original schedule held.

Google's May announcement describes something considerably more ambitious than a resized icon row: a Search box that dynamically expands as you type and adds shortcuts beneath the text field for AI Mode, Search Live (labeled "Talk" in the interface), and Create, which uses the Nano Banana model inside Google Lens, 9to5Google reported. Google calls it its biggest upgrade to the Search box in more than 25 years, according to its own announcement.

That box is built to accept text, images, files, video, or Chrome tabs as inputs, Google said. Nothing in the supplied sources says multimodal upload is restricted to paid subscribers. The subscription gates Google described apply specifically to information agents and mini apps, not to the box's basic input options.

Neither Google's announcement nor 9to5Google's report links the Google app's version 17.32 resize to the intelligent Search box rollout, or states that updating to 17.32 grants access to it. Treat the two as separately confirmed developments rather than one update described two ways.

Google's separate July announcement about Google Images shows how unevenly related features can roll out even within the same company post: Circle to Search was already available on more than 580 million Android devices worldwide, while a new browseable Google Images home was still described as something that "will roll out over the coming weeks on desktop in the U.S. in English," according to Google. As of this writing, nothing in the supplied research confirms whether that desktop rollout finished. The same caution applies to the Pixel search bar and the intelligent Search box: a feature announced doesn't mean a feature available everywhere at once.

What to check before you expect more

Confirm your Google app version first. If you're already on 17.32 or later and don't see the taller bar, that gap is worth watching, since the reporting doesn't establish a fixed timeline for every account or region.

From there, treat AI Mode availability and subscription tier as separate questions. A resized search bar doesn't tell you whether the expanding, multimodal Search box has reached your account, and it doesn't tell you whether information agents or mini apps are live on your AI Pro or Ultra plan. Check each one directly in the app rather than assuming the icons next to your search bar are proof of anything beyond themselves.
