Gemini Find Hub Remembered Items: How the Feature Works
Google is rolling out a Gemini feature that saves where people stash things they rarely use, so they can ask for the spot back months later. The company's own example: tell Gemini where you put your passport, and Gemini will save the location, according to The Verge, reporting on Google's announcement today.
The entry, plus an optional photo, lands in a new tab inside Find Hub that Google calls Gemini Find Hub remembered items. Users pull it back up by asking Gemini directly or opening the app, The Verge reports. The capability is part of this month's Android feature drop, requires Android 16 or later, and reaches only countries where both Gemini and Find Hub already operate; Google's announcement frames it as coming soon rather than already live.
That framing matters because Find Hub now spans two different kinds of information: locations a user tells Gemini about, and locations a network of phones reports back for compatible Bluetooth tags. The gap between those two categories, and where each one falls short, is the story worth following here.
How Gemini Find Hub remembered items work
Setting it up is simple. A user tells Gemini they've put something important somewhere, Gemini logs the stated location, and the user can attach a photo for reference, The Verge explains. No accessory, no pairing process, nothing to charge.
Google's example is a passport, an item people may store for long periods between uses. That's a useful illustration of the feature's target case: things forgotten not because they're lost, but because months pass without anyone touching them.
Google describes the feature as a way to locate items "without having to attach a tracker," according to the announcement. The announcement does not describe a way for Gemini to verify that the item remains there or detect that it has moved.
Compare that with how Find Hub already handles tagged items. A compatible Bluetooth accessory broadcasts a low-energy signal, and any nearby Android phone can detect it and relay the location back anonymously through Google's crowdsourced network, Android Police explains. That network draws on hundreds of millions of Android phones acting as passive relays, per Android Police, and Bluetooth Low Energy uses little enough power that phones can take part without draining their batteries, Android Police notes. A remembered item has none of that infrastructure behind it. It's a stored note, not a live signal.
Where remembered items fit in Find Hub's broader buildout
Find Hub wasn't always this expansive. Google grew the service from a phone-finding tool into a platform covering compatible Bluetooth tags and accessories for keys, bags, and luggage, Android Police notes.
Three distinct cases now live inside the app, and they behave differently:
- A stationary item whose location a user tells Gemini to remember, like a passport kept in a drawer.
- A tagged item, like keys or a backpack, whose location updates automatically as nearby Android phones relay its Bluetooth signal.
- Checked luggage carrying a compatible tag, whose live location can be shared directly with a participating airline if the bag goes missing.
That third case is the clearest example of network-detected location doing real work. Earlier this year, Google rolled out a way to generate a secure link inside Find Hub for a tagged item and hand it to a participating carrier; the link expires automatically after seven days, or as soon as the phone detects the item is back with its owner, according to Google's announcement. Google says the location data involved is encrypted and that users control who can see it, per the same post. More than ten major airlines now accept Find Hub locations as part of their baggage-recovery process, Google says, and Google said more airlines, including Qantas, were coming. Google is also working with Samsonite to embed Find Hub technology into its latest suitcase designs, and compatible Samsonite models now ship ready to pair with the network out of the box, per the same announcement.
That airline tool only works because a physical tag or accessory is already attached to the bag. A passport remembered through Gemini has no equivalent mechanism if it actually goes missing between the drawer and wherever it's needed next. The remembered-items feature preserves a location a user supplied; nothing in Google's description checks whether that location still holds true.
Remembered items suit belongings that stay in one place between uses: documents in a drawer, a spare key in a lockbox. Tags and network accessories remain the tool for anything that can move, get stolen, or go missing in transit.
What Google hasn't said about privacy
Some of the groundwork already exists elsewhere in Gemini, just not obviously connected to this feature. When Google announced Gemini's past-chat reference feature in February 2025, it introduced a separate control panel called Gemini Apps Activity, letting users review, delete, or turn off Gemini Apps Activity altogether, Google said. Whether a remembered-item entry, complete with a photo of a passport, falls under that same panel is not something Google has confirmed. The connection is plausible given both features live inside Gemini, but plausible isn't confirmed.
The encryption and link-expiration assurances Google has published cover tagged-item sharing specifically, the airline case described above, not the software-only remembered-items entries announced today, per Google's announcement.
The announcement reviewed for this story does not specify how long a remembered item and its photo stay stored, or whether the entry requires authentication beyond an unlocked phone. It also does not explain what protections apply if someone else accesses a logged-in device. Google's example is a passport, an item people may store for long periods between uses, which makes those open questions worth watching once the rollout actually reaches devices.
Gemini will save a user-declared location and optional photo to Find Hub's remembered-items tab, retrievable by voice or in-app, on Android 16 devices in supported markets, The Verge reports. Google has described the feature as a stored reminder, not a live tracker. Whether that distinction holds up with something as sensitive as a passport will depend on whether Google eventually publishes the retention and access details the announcement currently leaves out.
