Google Photos edited photos missing from WhatsApp? Here's the fix
If your edited Google Photos pictures stopped showing up in WhatsApp's attachment picker, Google has an actual fix. The bug sent edited images into hiding across WhatsApp, Telegram, and a handful of other Android apps, even though the photos never left Google Photos itself (Android Authority, today). The correction shipped in Google Photos version 7.97, and Android Authority and 9to5Google each tested the update independently and confirmed the picker problem no longer shows up.
If you're seeing this symptom now, update Google Photos to 7.97 or later. Testing from both outlets indicates the issue doesn't recur on that version or the following one, 7.98.
Nothing was deleted in any of the reported cases. The edited image stayed fully visible inside Google Photos the entire time; other apps just couldn't find the file (Android Authority, today). 9to5Google traces the bug back to roughly July or August of this year, which means it dogged Android users for a few months before Google finally pushed out a fix.
Why Google Photos edited photos are missing from WhatsApp
Saving an edit in Google Photos, even something as minor as a crop or a 90-degree rotation, could knock the image out of the share picker in WhatsApp and several other apps. Android Authority's reporting lists Google Messages, Gemini, and WhatsApp among the affected apps; 9to5Google adds Telegram to that list.
Complaints about this showed up in Google's own support forums well before the fix arrived. One thread flagged the problem on a Pixel 10 Pro last year, and a separate thread described the identical symptom on a Pixel 8 last month (Google Photos Community; Google Photos Community). Neither thread proves the two reports share one root cause, but paired with the outlets' reporting, they confirm the bug hit more than one device and more than one app rather than a single fluke.
Google confirmed last month that it knew about this specific picker problem and said a fix was already in the works (9to5Google).
Google Photos 7.97 bug fix: what's confirmed
Google confirmed the fix landed in Photos version 7.97. Artem Russakovskii, the founder of APKMirror, said he reported the bug directly to Google's Photos team and later tested the update himself to verify it actually worked (Android Authority, today).
9to5Google ran its own separate test and reached the same conclusion, checking version 7.98 as well and finding no recurrence of the hidden-image behavior.
To check where your own phone stands:
- Open the Play Store and search for Google Photos.
- Compare your installed version number against the listing.
- Update to 7.97 or later if you're running an older build.
- Edit a new photo and check whether it shows up in WhatsApp's attachment picker.
- If an older edited photo is still missing, try "Save as copy" on that image and test again.
Neither outlet says whether photos edited before the update reappear automatically once you're on 7.97, or whether you'll need to re-save them by hand. Google hasn't addressed that gap. Treat the fix as confirmed for new edits going forward, and check older files one at a time before assuming they're resolved too.
What's behind edited photos not visible in Android apps
Android Authority traces the problem to how Android handles non-destructive edits, which keep the original file intact while layering changes on top instead of overwriting it. A related report on Google's Issue Tracker points to a failure in local media-URI indexing after an edit is saved, which left other apps unable to resolve the file's location until the phone went through a full reboot. If that holds up, a restart might force Android to reindex the library, though neither Google nor Android Authority confirms that as an official workaround.
A Google Photos Community thread describes a similar mechanism in plainer terms. After cropping or rotating a photo on a Pixel 8, the poster found the newly saved file had lost its system indexing, so Android's media index couldn't resolve the path for apps like WhatsApp, Discord, or Messages (Google Photos Community, last month). One user in that thread said the image eventually showed up after an overnight sync. That's one unverified report, not a confirmed mechanism.
9to5Google is upfront that Google has never published an official root-cause explanation for the bug. The indexing theory lines up with what Android Authority describes, but it's still the most credible available explanation rather than a confirmed diagnosis.
Still missing edited photos after updating? What to try
Update first. The testing Android Authority and 9to5Google ran on 7.97 and 7.98 shows the picker bug doesn't recur on those versions, though neither outlet tested every device or account configuration out there.
If you can't update right away, use "Save as copy" instead of overwriting the original when you save an edit. Google recommended that option as a workaround for a related editing bug it acknowledged last month (9to5Google), and community users separately reported that the same option made edited images available to other apps right away instead of leaving them stuck for hours (Google Photos Community, last year; Google Photos Community, last month).
Don't confuse this with a separate bug that hit Google Photos around the same stretch. That one made the Share, Edit, Add to, and Trash buttons unresponsive after editing a photo, and Google told Android Authority that version 7.94 fixed it, though at least one reader said the problem persisted even after updating (Android Authority, today). For that issue, Google's temporary advice was to manage edited photos through photos.google.com instead of the mobile app while the fix was in progress (9to5Google).
Both bugs can show up right after editing a photo, but the symptoms differ, and neither outlet confirms a shared technical cause. Fixing one doesn't guarantee the other is resolved on your device.
Open the Play Store now and confirm your Google Photos version is 7.97 or later. Test a freshly edited photo in WhatsApp's picker before assuming the fix applies to your installation, and if an older photo is still missing, try "Save as copy" on that specific file rather than waiting it out. Keep an eye on Google's official release notes in case either bug resurfaces.
