Everyone has that internal checklist on the way out the door. Keys? ID? Phone? Check, check, check. But it still feels like you're missing something as you head off to work. It's not until your ringtone starts blasting at full volume in an important meeting that you realize what you forgot to do: put your phone on vibrate.
On phones running Android 9 Pie or later, hold down the volume up button and the power button at the same time. A toast message will appear indicating your phone is on vibrate in about a half-second flat. Yep! It's really that simple.
You can also make this key combination enable mute mode instead by navigating to Settings –> System –> Gestures –> Prevent ringing, and choosing "Mute" instead.
Unfortunately, this isn't a toggle. This button combo will only move from ring mode or mute mode to vibrate (or ring mode to mute mode if you changed the setting). But not the other way around, so you will need to raise the ring volume manually.
We tested this on about a dozen phones and found that it works on stock Android or stock-like Android skins running Android 9 Pie or newer. It doesn't work on Samsung, LG, or Sony, but basically every other phone.
