Blizzard is launching a Diablo Immortal StarCraft crossover next week, and it comes packaged with something most limited-time events skip entirely: a permanent change to the game's gear system. The Battle for Beyond event runs May 13 through June 10, bringing faction-themed combat mechanics, a new Legendary Gem, and competitive leaderboards. Shipping in the same update is a permanent expansion of gear-slot access for every player, according to Blizzard's announcement published this week.
The crossover content goes away on June 10. The gear-slot change does not.
The gear-slot change: what's permanent and who it affects
Blizzard is describing the gear-slot expansion as a "permanent optimization" shipping alongside the update. Starting May 13, all players will have access to all eight primary gear slots simultaneously, removing what was previously a progression requirement for the final two, Blizzard said in its announcement.
Players who have not yet unlocked those final two slots will have placeholder gear automatically placed in them when the update goes live. Blizzard has not specified what those default items are, noting that final details are still to be announced.
Three groups interact with this change differently. New players gain access to a full eight-slot loadout without having to reach a progression gate first. Returning players who left before unlocking those final two slots come back to a more complete character than the one they left. Players who already have all eight slots active are unaffected by the change itself.
What is confirmed: the change is permanent, it applies to everyone, and it goes live on May 13 alongside the crossover.
How the Diablo Immortal Battle for Beyond event works
The crossover runs inside a feature called the Aeon of the Stars, which hosts a specially modified version of Conqueror, Diablo Immortal's competitive mode. That variant includes weekly faction-based leaderboards tracking standings across the full four-week event window, according to Blizzard.
The faction mechanics are the clearest translation of StarCraft's identity into Diablo Immortal's combat system. Shrines scattered across the battlefield grant combat orbs tied to one of the three StarCraft races. Each shrine triggers a distinct effect when activated.
The Terran shrine applies a Stim Pack, boosting Attack Speed and Movement Speed by 30% for eight seconds. The Zerg shrine converts all attacks into poison projectiles that deal damage over time for a limited duration. The Protoss shrine wraps the player in a protective shield that lasts until it absorbs a set amount of damage or its time limit expires.
Stim Pack is a Terran unit ability in StarCraft. The Zerg faction is commonly associated with swarm-based attrition gameplay. Protoss relies on energy shields as its primary defensive layer. The three shrine effects map directly to those identities, giving the crossover mechanics a coherent logic rather than just a coat of paint.
Group play is built into the event's reward structure. Teams of four complete event-specific objectives together to unlock exclusive rewards, Terra reported this week. Solo players can participate, but the reward track is designed around squad completion.
What the Diablo Immortal x StarCraft collaboration offers to earn
A new Legendary Gem channeling Zerg-style destruction is available through the Dark Ascension dungeon during the event, with a hard cap of one per player, according to Blizzard. The dungeon access window runs through June 10. Whether the gem can be obtained through any other means, including paid bundles, has not been disclosed.
Two StarCraft-inspired Familiar Skins are also available during the event. Familiars are visible cosmetic companions in Diablo Immortal, and both skins are only available before the event closes.
The dividing line between what requires action and what happens automatically:
The gear-slot expansion applies to all players on May 13 with no action required
The Legendary Gem requires running Dark Ascension during the event window; one per player
The Conqueror variant and faction leaderboards run weekly across all four weeks
The Familiar Skins are available through event participation before June 10
For players returning after time away, the gear-slot update alone is a reason to log in on May 13. For active players focused on progression, the Dark Ascension window is the priority before it closes.
What stays after June 10
When Battle for Beyond ends, the faction shrine mechanics, the Conqueror variant, weekly leaderboards, and Familiar Skin availability all close with it. The Legendary Gem stays with players who acquired it during the event window. The eight-slot gear access remains permanent for all players.
The game is free to play on Android, iOS, and PC, with no platform receiving an earlier start date. Both the gear-slot update and the crossover content go live simultaneously across all platforms on May 13.
Two things from this update will still be in the game after the StarCraft branding is gone: the gear-slot change, which applies automatically, and the Legendary Gem, which requires players to engage with Dark Ascension before the window closes. Everything else is currently scheduled to end on June 10.
