One of the most notable visual changes that Google brought to its Pixel smartphones on Android 10 was a system-wide dark mode. At the touch of a button, you can go from a blinding white theme to a more calming darker color, which is excellent for your eyes in low-light environments. However, it had not included a way to switch between themes automatically based on the time of day — until now.
Swapping between dark and light themes is pretty easy on Pixel phones already, but being able to set a schedule seems like it could be helpful. Imagine the light theme turning on every morning, and the dark theme taking over during the nighttime hours — all done automatically. It sounds pretty simple, but it's one of those things you didn't know you might like to have until you try it.
Before you can get started with a specific dark theme schedule, you'll first need to head to Settings –> Display –> Dark theme. Alternatively, if you add the "Dark theme" tile to your Quick Settings (swipe down from the top of the screen twice, tap the pencil icon, and drag the "Dark theme" tile to the active area), you can long-press on it to jump right to its settings.
Next, tap "Schedule," then you can choose between "Turns on from sunset to sunrise" or "Turns on at custom time." The first option will take care of things for you by opting to turn dark mode on at night and off during the day.
If you need more flexibility, the second option might be a better fit. When you select custom, you can pick the start and stop time for when you want your dark theme to be active. That way, you can create a specific schedule that caters to you instead. Maybe you'd prefer to have dark mode kick on sometime later in the evening? You can certainly do that.
Something so simple can have a significant impact on how you use your device, right? At the very least, it saves you a few extra taps per day. It also takes care of itself without you having to think about it, so that's another benefit if you adopt a dark mode schedule into your routine. Enjoy!
